How To Spot Burnout Three Months Before It Hits

In our wellness coaching practice we see burnout up close every week. The good news is that it is almost always foreshadowed by small, recognisable signals — sometimes months in advance.

The first signal is usually emotional. Things that used to feel exciting start to feel like obligations. A project you would have loved a year ago feels heavy. This is your nervous system telling you something is off.

The second signal is physical. Sleep gets shallower. Caffeine demand creeps up. Small illnesses linger longer. Your body is requesting maintenance — and the longer you ignore the request, the more expensive the repair.

The third signal is relational. You become slightly more impatient with people you love. You start declining invitations you used to enjoy. Social energy is among the first reserves to drain.

If two or more of these are showing up, treat it as a real warning, not a personality flaw. The interventions are small but powerful: more sleep, fewer commitments, one daily 20-minute walk, and an honest conversation with someone you trust.

Burnout is much easier to prevent than to recover from. Listen to the early signals and you will probably never need a longer course of action.
